What does it take to create places together across sectors, disciplines, and borders?


This session shares early insights from CHAMP, an EIT Culture & Creativity-funded master's module that transforms Helsingborg, Sweden, into an urban living lab for heritage-led placemaking. Developed by partners from Sweden, Slovakia, Latvia, and beyond—including universities, municipalities, creative practitioners, and innovation organisations—the programme brings students into real-world placemaking challenges where cultural heritage becomes a catalyst for creativity, entrepreneurship, and local development. The panel reunites the consortium to reflect on the first experiences of designing a cross-border educational placemaking initiative. We will explore three key questions:
  • How can different sectors come together to contribute to local placemaking? 
  • How can cross-border collaboration create opportunities for knowledge exchange? 
  • What are the key lessons when designing a placemaking module at university level? 


Drawing on student projects from Helsingborg's urban labs, partner reflections, and perspectives from different parts of Europe, the session will offer both successes and challenges from the collaboration process. Participants will also be invited into a discussion on the governance, pedagogy, and trust-building that placemaking partnerships require. The session offers practical insights for academics, municipalities, and creative practitioners interested in building cross-sector and heritage-led placemaking initiatives.
