What if the key to creating better public spaces was to see the city through the eyes of a
teenager?
Too often, we design places for young people instead of with them. In this highly interactive
workshop, you won’t just hear about youth engagement - you’ll experience it.
After reconnecting with your own memories of being 15, you’ll be introduced to four real places
from Slovakia, Denmark and Australia. Through photos and short stories, you’ll discover the
location, the challenges and the opportunities each community faced - but not the solutions.
Working in small teams, your challenge will be to reimagine one of these spaces and design a
place where young people feel welcome, valued and inspired to belong, create and participate.
Once each group presents its ideas, the facilitators will reveal what actually happened. You’ll
discover how young people co-designed and transformed these places, the methods used to
engage them, the obstacles encountered and the outcomes achieved - from community
gathering spaces and placemaking education to Aboriginal youth-led street transformation and
participatory research.
Leave with practical tools, fresh inspiration and a new perspective on co-creation, proving that
when young people are trusted as partners rather than consulted as an afterthought, they don’t
just shape better places - they help build stronger, more connected communities.
