Pigeons and other strangers

Who belongs in the city? Who has agency, and who gets to be involved in shaping public spaces? 


This session explores how non-human city residents, such as pigeons, can challenge human-centred ideas of placemaking, urban ecologies, belonging, and participation. Why pigeons? Few city animals provoke such contradictory reactions. Back in time, they were symbols of peace and messengers of love, but nowadays pigeons became labelled as pests when they were no longer considered useful. 


Through playful observation, mapping, discussion, and speculative design prompts, we reflect on how we assign value, belonging, and care in the city.
