Creating better cities together.
Thursday September 24, 2026 4:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
Placemaking projects rarely unfold exactly as planned. When communities come together to negotiate belonging, priorities, identities, and shared ownership of a place, unexpected challenges inevitably emerge. Yet these moments of uncertainty often become the most valuable opportunities for learning.
This interactive session brings together practitioners from Italy, Turkey, Scotland, Poland, and Mexico to share real-life placemaking experiences from diverse cultural contexts. Through a series of short case studies, we will explore how each project evolved, the unforeseen challenges we encountered while working with communities, and the creative strategies we used to navigate them.
Rather than presenting “perfect” projects or one-size-fits-all solutions, we invite participants to engage with the complexity of participatory processes and reflect on how different approaches can foster belonging in unique contexts.
The session will conclude with an interactive exercise where participants will be invited to respond to the challenges presented, propose alternative solutions, and collectively imagine new ways of addressing tensions that arise when building places together.
Participants will leave with practical insights, fresh perspectives, and a deeper understanding that uncertainty is not a barrier to placemaking—it is an essential part of the process.
