New European Bauhaus: the pathway to building resilient cities through culture and collaboration?

This panel brings together city representatives, activists, urban planners, cultural producers, artists, and policy experts to explore how resilience is shaped in practice and supported by policy. 
 
Across Europe, cities face complex challenges that require place-based, participatory approaches connecting people, nature, and the built environment. Drawing on ideas and experiences from projects such as the Future Cities Platform, the Liveable Cities Network/NEBHUB 2050, NEB Junction, and EIT Community NEB, the discussion highlights how cities move from ideas and experimentation to implementation and strategic frameworks. 
 
The panel will also reflect on how human-scale design, proximity, and everyday interactions contribute to resilience by strengthening the social fabric and fostering inclusive, adaptable urban environments. 
 
The focus of the session will be to link local practice to the New European Bauhaus (NEB) in particular, an EU initiative that simultaneously promotes sustainability, inclusion, and aesthetics to shape better living environments. By bridging environmental goals with social cohesion and cultural meaning, the NEB provides an important framework for building resilience that is not only technical, but also social and place-based. Through provocations from contributors internal and external to the NEB “bubble”, the panel will explore the potential of NEB in furthering resilience-driven agendas, its vulnerabilities to political shifts, and role in enabling systems transformation.
 
The panel also addresses the challenge of aligning projects and networks through a stepwise approach to avoid fragmentation and build stronger ecosystems. Connecting local action with European policy frameworks, the session provides insights on how to scale, generate momentum, and create meaningful impact.
