Beyond the pop-up: Inclusion and belonging in daily life

What are the possibilities and limits of placemaking for building inclusive and caring everyday environments?


This session explores the work of the Inclusive City Urban Living Labs (ULLs) in Vienna, Rotterdam, Oslo, and Budapest, on placemaking as a way of creating low-threshold spaces for care and belonging in daily life. 


The panel engages fellow practitioners in reflecting on placemaking as an ongoing practice through presentations and participatory discussions.  We will present practical tools and methods for placemakers on care and facilitation, community building, and highlighting or maintaining blue and green infrastructure in the city.


During the session we will share concrete examples and learnings from Vienna, Rotterdam, Oslo, and Budapest, and invite participants to contribute their own experiences in an open dialogue on inclusivity in Placemaking.  Our discussion will center on the questions: What does it mean to design spaces that people can shape and care for over time? Who is included? How can spaces support belonging without becoming over-programmed? And where are the limits of placemaking in terms of policy, legal protection, maintenance, and social inequality?
