Classrooms Without Walls: Placemaking Through Education for Community Recovery and Resilience in Wartime Ukraine

What happens to placemaking when recovery, resilience, and everyday life must happen at the same time?
In Ukraine, communities are rebuilding trust, adapting to uncertainty, and shaping the future while the war is still ongoing. In this context, placemaking is more than a tool for improving public space—it becomes a way to support social cohesion, psychological recovery, local leadership, and collective action.
This session brings together four Ukrainian organizations—Urban Reform School, Kharkiv School of Architecture, Platform Ostriv, and Ukrainian Urbanism Platform—to explore how education can become a powerful placemaking practice. Through four diverse cases from Kyiv, Lviv, Shepetivka, and the relocated Kharkiv School of Architecture, participants will discover how learning connects residents, municipalities, students, schools, artists, urban planers and civic initiatives in creating meaningful places under conditions of extreme uncertainty.
From reimagining parks as spaces for healing and belonging, to empowering schoolchildren to transform their neighbourhoods, to building long-term communities around innovation hubs and displaced institutions, the session offers practical examples of how placemaking can strengthen resilience.
Participants will gain insights into methods, partnerships, and engagement tools developed in a context where resources are limited, trust must be rebuilt continuously, and long-term plans can change overnight. Beyond the Ukrainian experience, the session will invite reflection on how these approaches can help communities across Europe respond to their own challenges—from climate adaptation and migration to social fragmentation and declining trust.
