Public spaces become truly safe not only through design, but through the people who feel able to use them. This session explores how safety, belonging, and participation are deeply connected, bringing together two complementary perspectives: London's gender-inclusive public space design framework and a community-based case study from Umm al-Fahm, Palestine.
Participants will discover how moving beyond crime prevention toward inclusion can reshape the way we plan and manage public spaces. The session introduces practical tools developed through the Mayor of London's research and demonstrates how they were tested in real projects. Alongside this, the Umm al-Fahm case illustrates how fear and violence can drive women out of public space, while community-led initiatives can restore presence, strengthen social connections, and rebuild belonging.
Through discussion, case studies, and audience participation, participants will reflect on whose voices shape public spaces, what creates a genuine sense of safety, and how everyday places can become more inclusive through meaningful engagement. Whether working in policy, design, planning, or community development, participants will leave with practical approaches and transferable ideas for creating public spaces where everyone feels they belong.
