In an increasingly globalised world, more and more cities are being shaped by tourism and temporary use. Across Europe, from Lisbon to Barcelona, entire neighbourhoods are being transformed into spaces designed for visitors rather than residents. Urban space becomes curated and staged: boutique hotels replace local businesses, souvenir shops outnumber grocery stores, and cafés cater to short-term guests rather than everyday life.
At the same time, places that have little value for tourism often become less visible or are pushed out altogether: schools, repair shops, community noticeboards, neighbours chatting on their doorstep, laundry hanging from windows. These small traces reveal something essential: that a city is still being lived in. They are signs of routine, long-term presence, and care. But what is it that makes a city a city rather than a stage? What are the everyday practices, relationships, and forms of care that turn urban space into a place of belonging?
This interactive workshop invites participants to identify and reflect on these “signs of life” and explore how cities are affected when they are increasingly used rather than inhabited. Through observation, photography, discussion, and collective reflection, we will ask: What makes a city feel alive? What happens when fewer people live, organise, and care for a place? And how can we strengthen belonging in cities facing growing pressures of touristification?
Participants will leave with a heightened attentiveness to everyday urban life and a deeper understanding of the relationship between care, belonging, and the future of our cities.
