Skate the City: Youth-Led Placemaking in Public Space

What makes a public space skateable, welcoming and alive? In this outdoor walkshop, participants will explore the city through the eyes of skateboarders and young people who use public space actively, creatively and critically.

Together, we will take a short walk through Wroclaw and observe surfaces, edges, materials, safety, visibility, accessibility and informal patterns of use. The walk will lead us to an underused or poorly functioning public space, where we will discuss how small-scale tactical urbanism interventions could quickly activate the place for skateboarding, gathering and youth-led activities.

The session builds on the experience of the Skateholders project and Skateholders Forum festival in České Budějovice, where the local skateboarding community has become a platform connecting youth culture, public space, social participation and the European Capital of Culture 2028 programme.

Rather than presenting skateboarding as a niche activity or urban nuisance, the walkshop frames it as everyday placemaking: a way to build belonging, care, creativity and shared ownership in the city. Participants will leave with practical questions, observations and transferable tools for making public spaces more open to teenagers, informal culture and active use.
