About me
I am a Portuguese architect, founder of Atelier Backlar and Creative Director of Humanize Space, a research-driven initiative dedicated to integrating evidence-based scientific knowledge into architectural design. My work focuses on circular design, urban activation, and the creation of built environments that promote health, wellbeing, and sustainable communities. I studied at L’École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-La Villette and graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon in 2006. In 2009, I was awarded the INOV-Art International Internship Programme, which led me to Los Angeles, where I worked on innovative prefabricated housing systems. My professional experience subsequently took me to Paris and New York, where I practiced as a senior architect at Ateliers Jean Nouvel, before moving to London to join Barber & Osgerby and their interior architecture division, Universal Design Studio.Throughout my career, I have been driven by a growing interest in understanding how the built environment shapes human behaviour, health, and quality of life. This led me to complete a postgraduate programme in Neuroarchitecture at Escola Sert in Barcelona, where I explored the relationship between neuroscience and architectural design, as well as an advanced training programme in Architecture for Common Spaces at YACademy University in Bologna.
