Belonging Begins with Her
Thursday September 24, 2026 11:45am - 1:00pm CEST
Public spaces become truly safe not only through design, but through the people who feel able to use them. This session explores how safety, belonging, and participation are deeply connected, bringing together two complementary perspectives: London's gender-inclusive public space design framework and a community-based case study from Umm al-Fahm, Palestine.
Participants will discover how moving beyond crime prevention toward inclusion can reshape the way we plan and manage public spaces. The session introduces practical tools developed through the Mayor of London's research and demonstrates how they were tested in real projects. Alongside this, the Umm al-Fahm case illustrates how fear and violence can drive women out of public space, while community-led initiatives can restore presence, strengthen social connections, and rebuild belonging.
Through discussion, case studies, and audience participation, participants will reflect on whose voices shape public spaces, what creates a genuine sense of safety, and how everyday places can become more inclusive through meaningful engagement. Whether working in policy, design, planning, or community development, participants will leave with practical approaches and transferable ideas for creating public spaces where everyone feels they belong.

From Exhibition to Conversation: Let’s Shape Placemaking Development Together
Thursday September 24, 2026 11:45am - 1:00pm CEST
This session is part of an interactive exhibition on place-led development, initiated by the Place-Led Development Working Group of Placemaking Europe, in collaboration with Placemaking Europe.
The exhibition brings together key insights from inspiring projects, lessons learned, and emerging practices from across Europe. It aims to clarify what place-led development is, how it builds on placemaking, and how it can contribute to long-term spatial, social and economic impact. Delegates are invited to contribute their own cases, questions and perspectives, during the session and during the week.
This session is directly connected to the exhibition and moves from exploration to exchange. Participants will be able to reflect on the presented content, share their own experiences, and collectively deepen the understanding of place-led development in practice.
Together, we will explore questions such as:
  • How can placemaking influence long-term development processes?
  • What is needed to move from temporary interventions to lasting change?
  • How can we strengthen collaboration across disciplines and stakeholders?

How we use public spaces? Practical workshop on data-driven placemaking
Thursday September 24, 2026 11:45am - 1:00pm CEST
How can we better understand whether a public space supports social resilience and a sense of belonging? And how can placemakers move beyond intuition to make these qualities visible, measurable, and actionable?
This outdoor workshop introduces participants to a data-driven approach to placemaking through the lens of human needs. Working in a public space in Wrocław, participants will learn and apply our original interdisciplinary framework of 11 User Needs, developed to diagnose how public environments support everyday experiences, behaviors, and social relationships.
During a guided field assessment, participants will observe and analyze the space from multiple user perspectives, identifying which needs are well supported and which remain unmet. The workshop will demonstrate how research-based observations can reveal hidden barriers to inclusion, social interaction, and place attachment, while also uncovering opportunities for meaningful spatial improvements.
The session combines perspectives from architecture, environmental psychology, sociology, and urban design, offering participants practical perspective that can be applied in planning, design, placemaking, and public engagement processes. By the end of the workshop, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how spatial qualities influence human behavior and how evidence-based diagnosis can strengthen the impact of placemaking interventions.
More information about the methodology is available at jazplus.pl/ias.

Mapping Home: What Makes Us Feel We Belong?
Thursday September 24, 2026 11:45am - 1:00pm CEST
What does it mean to feel at home in a place, and can that feeling exist in more than one place at once? In this interactive session, Diana Mideros opens a conversation with invited guests about home, identity, and belonging, drawing on her own experience as a migrant navigating different cultures and cities. Participants will then take part in a collective mapping activity: using two colors of post-its, they will mark on a world map what makes them feel at home in their place of origin, and what does — or doesn't yet — make them feel at home in the city they currently live in. The result is a living, collective map that reveals patterns of belonging, displacement, and connection across borders, and an invitation to reflect on what "home" really means in the cities we share.

Placemaking Poland: Meet, Connect & Carry It Forward
Thursday September 24, 2026 11:45am - 1:00pm CEST

Whether you’ve zjedliście zęby na placemakingu or are just beginning your journey, come join us!

Forget the usual networking session. We’ll get to know each other through fun, playful activities — sharing what we’re working on, discovering unexpected connections, and putting faces to names across the Placemaking Poland network.

But there’s a bigger question behind the fun: what can we build together while Placemaking Week Europe is here — and how can we carry its legacy forward once the festival leaves Poland?

Come to meet, play, exchange, connect and imagine what’s next for placemaking in Poland. Or simply come to spend this moment with like-minded people who are passionate about placemaking and about how we make places in Poland. :)

Placemaking with Local, and Global, Networks
Thursday September 24, 2026 11:45am - 1:00pm CEST
Hear from the leaders of the global placemaking movement, organizing regional anf national networks to support community-powered public spaces.

PlacemakingX recently convened two Global Placemaking Summits to set the course for the global placemaking movement and support the 30+ regional placemaking networks with emerging cross-cutting global agendas. Leaders from these networks will present as panelists for this session.

Public spaces, and the people that protect and improve them, transcend borders and reflect all stripes of humanity. People that practice placemaking to transform their communities bridge all kinds of barriers - from spatial and sectoral silos, to divides amongst demographics and disciplines.

The goal of this session is to highlight, connect and organize public space and placemaking leadership globally and showcase regional placemaking networks for participants to connect to and support. The global placemaking community stands ready to support you from wherever you are at in your placemaking journey.

Waves & Words: Co-designing Belonging at the World's Most Unlikely Place
Thursday September 24, 2026 11:45am - 1:00pm CEST
What can a remote fishing village teach us about belonging, resilience, and community-led placemaking? In Ramin, on Iran’s Indian Ocean coast, a community library and the country’s only surf club have transformed books, waves, local knowledge, and women’s participation into powerful resources for social change.

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to Mardumshahr, an asset-based, bottom-up co-creation methodology tested in more than 120 communities across Iran. Through an immersive encounter with sounds, images, and objects from Baluchestan, participants will explore Ramin’s social, cultural, natural, and spatial assets. They will then work collaboratively to create a relational asset map and develop a spatial design concept and initial branding direction for the community.

Participants will learn to identify overlooked local assets, turn community stories into spatial ideas, and facilitate co-design in contexts shaped by exclusion, limited resources, and contested access to public space. The session will also create a practitioner network based on concrete commitments and shared learning.
Join us to experience placemaking not as the delivery of solutions but as the collective discovery of what a place already holds.

How to shape a good place – and not f*ck it up
Thursday September 24, 2026 11:45am - 1:00pm CEST
Our four presentations each ask a version of the same question: who does the work of placemaking, what does it mean to move from idea to action, and how do you make sure that the work survives?

Kady Yellow – Downtown Vision, Jacksonville
We open the session with people – and the ideas they have for transforming downtown spaces. Placemaking Jax nurtures resident aspirations with a program that includes an open-call, grants, and Placemaking School.

Aaron Finn & Ben Stutman – The Fitzrovia Partnership / Momentum Transport, London
What happens after a district-scale public realm strategy is developed? The Fitzrovia account sits in the “messy middle” - occupying a transitional space between plan-making and implementation, and challenged by two local authority boundaries.

Andrew Pask – Placemaking Canada
Andrew’s research explores how city-scale placemaking networks offer a means to link local initiatives to create broader, systems-based change. These organizations are an under-discussed opportunity for the broader placemaking movement.

Lisa Taylor – Coherent Cities / Place Collective UK, London & Manchester
What happens when champions move on? How leadership evolves is a critical factor in sustaining vibrant spaces and engaged users. Succession becomes a test of whether a placemaking initiative is durable and lasting.

The Playable, Resilient City: Co-Creating Urban Futures with the Next Generation
Thursday September 24, 2026 11:45am - 1:00pm CEST
Can centering a city’s youngest residents solve the overlapping crises of urban isolation, climate vulnerability, and rigid municipal bureaucracy?
This high-energy, interactive laboratory challenges traditional "child-blind" urban planning by positioning children as the ultimate protagonists of city resilience. Merging groundbreaking frameworks from India, Denmark, and the Netherlands, this session bridges the gap between grassroots tactical urbanism, historical adventure play, and high-level climate strategy.
Why you should join:Instead of sitting through passive presentations, you will enter a cross-continental design studio.
What you will learn and experience:
  • The "Return on Play" Matrix: A finance-backed framework to successfully argue for playful social infrastructure inside strict municipal budgets.
  • Climate-Play Toolkits: Practical methods from Amsterdam’s KIEM program to teach communities about alternative energy and water adaptation through play.
  • Tactical Governance: Proven strategies to broker "unlikely coalitions" between grassroots communities, corporate partners, and municipal police.
You will actively apply a "Child-Impact Lens" to turn urban dead zones into vibrant, intergenerational hubs. You won't just leave inspired—you will walk out with a concrete, downloadable "Playable City Manifesto" packed with fiscal, environmental, and design tools to disrupt your own local bureaucracy.

Turning Back to Water: How to Reclaim Public Spaces for Everyday Life?
Thursday September 24, 2026 11:45am - 1:00pm CEST
Across Europe, cities are rediscovering their rivers, canals, and waterfronts, not only as blue infrastructure but as places for everyday life, social connection and climate resilience. Yet turning this vision into reality often means navigating complex regulations, changing public perceptions, and building new partnerships between communities and institutions.
In this interactive workshop, practitioners from Budapest, Vienna, and České Budějovice will share how they are testing new ways of reconnecting people with urban water through placemaking. After short case presentations, participants will work in small groups to tackle real-world challenges, exchange experiences, and co-develop solutions for making water more accessible and integrated into everyday urban life.
Join us to explore how central European cities can turn back to water as a shared public space.

Dancing to the Algorithm: A Digital Storytelling Toolbox for Organisations and Practitioners
How do we get people out into their cities when so much of their attention is online?

This participatory workshop explores how to communicate projects, explain impact, and build public awareness in a crowded digital landscape. Focusing on the fundamentals of human communication rather than platform trends, participants will learn how to capture attention, communicate ideas clearly, and tell stories that connect.

Using a hands-on "story blocks" method, participants will shape and test stories in real time, developing practical tools they can apply across social media, community engagement, campaigns, and public education. Through collaborative exercises, they’ll learn how to hook an audience, communicate complex ideas clearly, and create narratives that resonate beyond professional circles.

This session is ideal for anyone who wants to communicate their work more effectively and with greater confidence. Participants will leave with a practical storytelling framework, a story they have developed during the workshop, and a deeper understanding of how digital storytelling can help turn awareness into action.

Local Challenge 3: Under the Great Island Avenue
Thursday September 24, 2026 2:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
This session will take place entirely on site at the Local Challenge. To join us, you can either:
- meet us by the entrance of Wrocław Congress Hall at 2:15 PM and walk together to the site.
- meet us directly on site! We’re starting at 2:30 PM. You can find the site by searching for “Al. Wielkiej Wyspy” on Google Maps or by following the pin below: https://maps.app.goo.gl/91dzY59JcZgpoTGe6

Where Wroclaw’s Great Island Avenue passes over the Oder river its bridge creates underutilized space underneath. As the natural waterfront is a popular route for runners and walkers, the overpass offers an opportunity to explore how overlooked infrastructural spaces can become active public places. FAKIE SkateWro has taken up the initiative to establish a skatepark on one of its banks, which has gained a lot of support within the city. But more is needed to make this an attractive and lively place for people.

In this local challenge we will explore: How can the overpass become a safe, cared-for and flexible public space that supports informal uses, sports and new forms of community activity?

We will gather international best practices on how to activate leftover spaces under bridges and highways, and develop a process that responds to local needs, strengthens existing assets and creates a sustainable model for its management. And as Wroclaw - and many other cities around the world - have plenty of such spaces, the outcomes could serve as a model to apply elsewhere. Bring your best practices and lessons learned, and leave a positive impact on Wroclaw this Placemaking Week Europe.

Thursday September 24, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
Who this session is for: This session is designed for participants already active in an established regional or global placemaking network, looking to learn from peers and cross-share knowledge with other networks. It's not an introduction to network-building. Come ready to exchange real experience with others doing this work.

Across Europe, regional placemaking networks continue to grow — bringing new challenges alongside the ones they've already worked through. With many opportunities and challenges shared across regions, it’s invaluable to learn from one another and exchange experiences. This collaboration strengthens our collective impact and helps us grow the European (and Global) placemaking movement.Using a World Café format, the gathering will provide a platform to explore key themes through moderated discussions. Participants will rotate between two rounds of conversations, with each table hosted by network leaders who bring unique expertise and insights.

Table 1  Growing pains, growing gains
How do networks evolve as they grow? This table looks at the practical and structural side of scaling: governance and decision-making as a group becomes more formal, the tools and platforms that hold day-to-day coordination together, and the ongoing question of when and how to open up to new members. Come with your own network's current challenges, or hear how others have navigated theirs.

Table 2 — Coordination without a shared postcode (working across borders)
How can placemaking networks collaborate across borders? This table looks at cross-border projects and exchanges between networks — what's worked, what hasn't, and where the opportunities are to do more together.

Table 3 —  Placemaking as a lever for institutional change
How can placemaking practice shift institutional thinking and policy — not just physical space? This table explores the bridge between grassroots placemaking and institutional actors, using examples like Placemaking Azerbaijan's engagement with WUF to unpack what it takes to move from local project to institutional influence.

Table 4 Bring your own questions – Open table
No set agenda — this table is for whatever's most pressing for your network right now. Bring a challenge, a question, or something you're currently figuring out, and work through it with others in the room.

From plot to place: How co-created urban green spaces build community across difference
Thursday September 24, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
Urban food gardens and green spaces are celebrated for their ecological value, but their real transformative power lies in how they are made, and with whom. Belonging doesn't emerge from consultation: it grows from processes that take people's values and lived experience as seriously as technical solutions, bringing together people who would otherwise never meet and turning anonymous plots into places communities genuinely care for together.

Organised by the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership, this session brings together three perspectives on what that actually requires. FEED4FOOD will present their experience building urban agriculture living labs with vulnerable groups in Cyprus. IntegrateNbS will introduce their values-based engagement methodology designed to unlock the transformative potential of NbS in Poland. VšĮ „Kultūros dirbtuvė” will share insights from their work on transforming a contested site in a Lithuanain neighbourhood into a layered, multifunctional public space.

Together they ask: what does it take, in facilitation, institutional flexibility, and physical design, to make a public space feel like it truly belongs to everyone? In this workshop, participants work in small groups on real placemaking challenges, using structured tools and to identify blind spots across the practical, political, and personal dimensions. Participants leave with practical methods they can adapt in their own contexts.

Street cARTS: Design, Build & Deploy
Thursday September 24, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
Street cARTS is a fast-paced, resident-driven placemaking model that transforms public space through the addition of mobile amenities and organically capturing local talent. This workshop activates participants as creators—designing, building, and deploying functional “Street cARTS” that provide tools and a platform to generate real-time public engagement.
At its core, this project is about building belonging through everyday interaction. Public space becomes meaningful when people see themselves in it—when their voice, culture, and presence shape the experience. Street cARTS creates immediate opportunities for connection by inviting participants to co-create shared moments that bring strangers together, encourage participation, and foster a sense of ownership in the city.
Participants collaborate in small groups to design and build Street cARTS based on the observed or known needs of the target community, then deploy them in nearby public spaces through live popups that invite interaction across cultures, ages, and backgrounds.

The Way of Water: Listening, Walking, Sensing
Thursday September 24, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
How is water perceived by our bodies? What stories, emotions, and relationships emerge from the river?
This session invites participants to explore how waterbodies, ecosystems, and communities are deeply interwoven. Emerging from the encounter of people with multicultural and interdisciplinary backgrounds, and driven by a shared enthusiasm for collective learning and exploration, this experience proposes a journey along a waterway in Wrocław.
Together, we will walk, listen, sense, draw, write, and share reflections through embodied listening practices, experiencing the river as a living presence. As we move along the water, we will pay attention to sounds, smells, textures and the everyday life of the city woven through its riverscapes.
Through walking and collective exchange, public space becomes a site of encounter and dialogue, activating both urban space and social connection. Stories from river communities will invite reflection on what water means across different places and lived experiences, opening perspectives on care, belonging, and coexistence.
This is a participatory and sensorial experience to feel the role of waterways in urban contexts, as well as in our daily lives. No prior knowledge or skills are needed - just curiosity and a willingness to slow down, listen, and engage.

Creating Data Led Placemaking Towards Inclusive Approach
Thursday September 24, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
In urbanizing cities, data-led approaches are essential for creating effective public spaces that truly serve communities. Traditional design often relies on intuition, resulting in underused plazas or unsafe streets. Data changes this by providing evidence through public space assessment tools, user needs analysis, and impact measurement.

Placemaking evaluation criteria gauge vibrancy and accessibility, while assessment frameworks quantify safety, inclusivity, and economic impact. These tools document tangible outcomes like footfall spikes, increased social interactions, and reduced crime to validate investments for budget-constrained decision-makers.

The core intent of this approach is to deliver concrete validation to decision-makers and donors, demonstrating the transformative impact of safe, inclusive, and livable public spaces.

This panel discussion format fosters dynamic exchange:
  • Opening Statements (3-5 min each): Panelists share data-driven insights.
  • Case Parallels (20 min): Moderated dialogue on methods from global contexts.
  • Audience Q&A (10 min): Interactive probing.
  • Closing Synthesis (10 min): Actionable takeaways for scaling.

From Ownership to Stewardship - Mobilizing Stakeholders and Partners for Long-Term Change
Thursday September 24, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
This session explores how places move from fragmented ownership to shared stewardship, focusing on how partnership models mobilise stakeholders and support long-term change. It is structured across presentation, panel discussion, and interactive workshop, allowing both insight and application.

The session begins with two presentations from London and Gothenburg. The London contribution sets out how Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) operate as business-led partnerships that coordinate investment, deliver public realm improvements, and manage activity at a neighbourhood scale. It explains how BIDs work from early-stage strategy and consultation through to delivery and ongoing management. The Gothenburg contribution introduces the Bergsjön 2031 initiative, where property owners act as long-term partners in area development, working alongside the municipality to address challenges around safety, employment, and economic participation.

A panel discussion builds on these examples, focusing on the challenge of aligning stakeholders with different priorities and maintaining delivery beyond initial strategy. It considers how locally embedded organisations build trust, coordinate action, and sustain investment over time.

The session then moves into an interactive workshop. Participants work through place-based scenarios, take on stakeholder roles, and examine barriers to progress. The discussion focuses on how partnership models can support coordination, engagement, and delivery in different contexts.

From Temporariness to Permanence: Three Foundations of Sustainable Placemaking
Thursday September 24, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
Across Europe, placemaking initiatives are transforming vacant buildings, post-industrial sites, and underused urban spaces into vibrant cultural and social communities. Yet many remain vulnerable, relying on temporary leases, fragile governance, limited funding, and shifting political priorities.
This session explores one of the key challenges facing placemaking today: how can temporary initiatives evolve into lasting, self-governed, and financially sustainable civic institutions?
Drawing on experiences from Poland and the Netherlands, the speakers will present practical approaches to securing the long-term future of cultural communities through three interconnected pillars: organizational resilience, financial sustainability, and programmatic development.
The session will examine governance models that strengthen community ownership, innovative funding strategies that reduce dependence on public subsidies, and participatory programming that builds lasting local engagement. Through real-life examples, participants will gain insight into how creative hubs can grow from temporary projects into stable institutions with a strong public role.
Rather than focusing solely on activating places, the discussion will show how placemaking can generate enduring social, cultural, and spatial value. Participants will leave with transferable tools, practical strategies, and fresh perspectives that can be adapted to their own local contexts, helping cultural initiatives become resilient, community-led ecosystems capable of thriving despite economic and political uncertainty.

From Primal to Powerful: Neuroscience-Based Placemaking
Thursday September 24, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
How do we know if a public space genuinely fosters resilience? It starts in the nervous system. In this hands-on session, we introduce the "Biological Layer" of urban resilience through the lens of neuroarchitecture and environmental psychology.
We begin by explaining the science behind the Wendy Assessment, our framework that measures how spatial design impacts human stress and flourishing across 5 dimensions (physical regulation, mental harmony, autonomy, connection, and meaning).
Then, we move into action. Participants will receive a simplified "Wendy Assessment Lite" toolkit and head outside to map a nearby public space, observing the subconscious biological realities of the environment rather than just its physical assets.
Returning to the room, groups will analyze their data to identify "resilience gaps" (e.g., where cognitive load is too high or autonomy is restricted). Finally, in a rapid design hackathon, each group will prototype a "lighter, faster, cheaper" placemaking intervention specifically designed to down-regulate the nervous system, mitigate those gaps, and build true social resilience in their assessed space.

Make Space for Nature: Co-creating Resilient Urban Futures
Thursday September 24, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
How can cities build resilience by working with nature and communities?
This session brings together three complementary perspectives on placemaking: experimental design, neighborhood-led action, and innovative Nature-based Solutions. While each initiative operates at a different scale and context, all share a common ambition: to create urban environments that support both human and non-human life.
From Berlin, Rouge explores how art, architecture, and collaboration with other species can help us reimagine public space and reconnect with the more-than-human world. From Rotterdam, the Green and Healthy Neighborhood program demonstrates how integrated local action can address climate adaptation, biodiversity, health, and social equity. The European GreenInCities project showcases how Nature-based Solutions, technology, and co-creation can support climate-neutral, resilient, and inclusive urban futures in Prato.
Together, these initiatives show how urban greening can strengthen social ties, improve ecological performance, and turn public space into a shared resource for people and nature.
The session includes presentations from each speaker, followed by an interactive discussion where participants will exchange ideas, reflect on the projects, and consider how these approaches can inform their own practice.
Join us for inspiring examples, practical insights, and new perspectives on creating healthier, more resilient, and more connected cities.

Prove It Green: Using KPIs to Win the Budget Battle
Thursday September 24, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
Green spaces make cities healthier, cooler and more liveable, yet when budgets are decided, "nice park" rarely beats "new road." Sound familiar? The problem isn't a lack of good ideas; it's a lack of evidence that speaks the language of decision-makers.
This hands-on workshop introduces a practical KPI framework that connects green interventions to the outcomes that matter most: wellbeing, climate resilience and long-term social value. Developed through the EU-funded ReGreeneration project, the approach helps planners, communities and advocates build data-driven cases that hold up in budget discussions, not just design reviews.
But you won't just learn about it - you'll experience it. Working in small groups around a case study set in a Wrocław neighbourhood, you'll compare intervention scenarios for public space, select relevant KPIs and negotiate a joint recommendation. Each participant takes on a different stakeholder role — Municipal Finance Expert, Neighbourhood Resident, Environmental Activist or Local Business Owner — each with different priorities, different concerns and a shared decision to be made. Can you find common ground?
You'll leave with a transferable method for building evidence-based cases for green urban interventions and the lived experience of doing it across conflicting priorities, just like in real city decision-making.
No KPI expertise required, just curiosity and an open mind. Come ready to negotiate!

On-site Workshop: Come and Help Build a Place Led Development Strategy for Social Square in Wroclaw!
Thursday September 24, 2026 2:30pm - 6:30pm CEST
Join us for this unique workshop! We will implement the principles of place-led development on the exciting case of the Social Square (Placu Społeczny), the most important area development in the city centre of Wroclaw.

Other than its name suggests, it offers no social experience, but is a place of heavy infrastructure. In the past decades, numerous plans were made, none implemented, leaving the area deserted.

Place Led Development is new area development, based on the values of great places and great communities.

This workshop is organised by the Place Led Development Working Group, the ULI Placemaking Council, and the City of Wroclaw.

During this workshop we will:
  1. Visit the site.
  2. Introduction by the City of Wroclaw: the site, the context and the plan.
  3. Introduction: Place Led Development.
  4. Work on the site in small teams, using the principles of Place Led Development as a fundament. Propose a placemaking approach that, with this long term vision in mind, starts tomorrow, and bring new energy into the area together with the city’s key stakeholders.
  5. Present the team’s work in front of the local jury.
  6. Closing plenary discussion about which inspiration we take from this.

Building Belonging: The Unexpected Journey
Thursday September 24, 2026 4:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
Placemaking projects rarely unfold exactly as planned. When communities come together to negotiate belonging, priorities, identities, and shared ownership of a place, unexpected challenges inevitably emerge. Yet these moments of uncertainty often become the most valuable opportunities for learning.
This interactive session brings together practitioners from Italy, Turkey, Scotland, Poland, and Mexico to share real-life placemaking experiences from diverse cultural contexts. Through a series of short case studies, we will explore how each project evolved, the unforeseen challenges we encountered while working with communities, and the creative strategies we used to navigate them.
Rather than presenting “perfect” projects or one-size-fits-all solutions, we invite participants to engage with the complexity of participatory processes and reflect on how different approaches can foster belonging in unique contexts.
The session will conclude with an interactive exercise where participants will be invited to respond to the challenges presented, propose alternative solutions, and collectively imagine new ways of addressing tensions that arise when building places together.
Participants will leave with practical insights, fresh perspectives, and a deeper understanding that uncertainty is not a barrier to placemaking—it is an essential part of the process.

Building Inclusive Cities: Intercultural Placemaking in Action
Thursday September 24, 2026 4:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
Placemaking and urban regeneration are often seen as naturally inclusive and open to diversity. But we want to do better, making sure that placemaking is genuinely inclusive and serves residents in all their diversity. This session will provide a forum for panellists and participants - local authorities and city officials especially - to gather and build up practice around genuinely inclusive placemaking, to share and work through examples where this has been achieved, and show cities how it can really be done for the benefit of all, to create resilient local communities for all.

Special focus will be on participation - how have cities involved diverse communities in placemaking processes? What tools have they used? How have you reached the most marginalised in society? But we will also think about how placemaking can mark, celebrate and facilitate diversity in the city.

These discussions will contribute to ongoing thematic work by the Council of Europe’s Intercultural Cities Programme on inclusive placemaking.

Layers of Place: exploring and mapping wellbeing in urban spaces
Thursday September 24, 2026 4:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
What makes a place feel good? This outdoor workshop invites participants to explore how the interplay between physical design, the people present, and sensory stimuli shapes wellbeing in urban spaces. Drawing from communication and design perspectives as well as environmental psychology, you’ll learn how to “read” a place through multiple lenses.
Working in small groups, participants will investigate a real urban environment using guided tools such as observation sheets, sketches, photography, and creative prompts. You’ll analyse what is present (functions and physical structure), what is felt (sensory stimuli), and how people respond and interact (social and emotional layers). Rather than identifying “good” or “bad” places, we explore how different environments may be experienced differently depending on the person, context and moment.
Back together, groups will co-create a collective installation, mapping insights and uncovering patterns: which characteristics support different forms of wellbeing, belonging, and everyday urban experience.
This session is ideal for anyone interested in design, psychology and human experience. Join to sharpen your observational skills, gain new analytical tools and look at space in an integrated way. Expect a dynamic mix of exploration, reflection, and creative collaboration, and leave with practical tools to better understand and shape meaningful places.

Sharing Stories & Roots of belonging
Thursday September 24, 2026 4:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
What do belonging, identity, and home mean in different contexts? Join Noor, a Palestinian social psychologist, and Dhanya, an Indian participatory designer, for an interactive workshop that combines personal narrative with place-based practice.
Together, we will explore the words and symbols that reflect our unique geographical and social identities, producing a collective picture of our shared experiences. Using Dhanya’s people’s archive mapping approach and Noor’s socio-gardening approaches, we will weave stories of the past, present, and future to build "belonging roots" and cultivate a sense of community ownership.
The workshop culminates in a literal and metaphorical grounding: sowing seeds from Palestine. Participants can choose to plant them during the session, take them to their homeland, or leave them in a public space in Poland as a living symbol of shared knowledge.
Come to this session to share your story, engage in a unique collective mapping experience, and leave with a physical piece of the workshop to plant out in the world.

UnBrexit : Celebrating Unity
Thursday September 24, 2026 4:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
Place Collective UK & UK delegates invite our European colleagues to celebrate collaboration and build new partnerships

It’s been 10 years since the Brexit vote and 6 years since the UK left the EU - but it feels progressively as though more and more relationships are being built across The Channel than ever before - and the Placemaking community is a key part of that.

To celebrate the cross-border relationships and forge more, Place Collective UK and UK friends will host an informal session of knowledge sharing, project-building, networking and celebration.

Join us to hear about cross-border collaborations and provocations, before exploring opportunities for placemakers to partner on real world projects and initiatives.

The spirit of integration and imagination will be fuelled by appropriately cross-Channel DJ sets and drinks which will continue to 6pm.

We want attendees to leave with closer relationships and bonds with the UK, as well as practical collaboration projects to take forward.

How to design, plan, and produce podcasts for placemaking and community participation
Thursday September 24, 2026 4:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
For cities and placemakers, there’s so much more to podcasts than interviewing experts or disseminating information. Podcasting holds huge potential to be integrated as a participatory placemaking tool and practice to drive active community dialogue and enable co-creation.

For example, podcasts can be used for urban research, democratising decision-making, closing the engagement feedback loop, and creating community-led content through placemaking activations.

This interactive workshop will guide participants through designing, planning, and producing a podcast for participatory placemaking using the MethodKit for Podcasts - a visual thinking tool for developing podcasts available in more than 45 languages.

Participants will learn how to develop a podcast oriented to placemaking; innovative ways to gather audio podcast content; shift community participation from passive to active engagement; and, work in small groups to exchange ideas.

Along with using the English version, the workshop will also demonstrate the newly released MethodKit for Podcasts cards in Polish.

Come along and find out how community placemaking and participation can be enhanced through podcasting.

Beyond the Opening Day: Designing for Intergenerational Stewardship
Thursday September 24, 2026 4:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
Buildings designed for 100-year lifecycles are financed on quarterly returns and planned within 5-year political cycles. Who is responsible after the ribbon-cutting?

Drawing on The Futures We Build playbook - developed as a collaboration between Perkins&Will London, Portland Design and the Royal College of Art - through cross-sector roundtables with 80+ built environment practitioners, this session introduces seven provocations that challenge short-term thinking in placemaking: from designing friction to counter algorithmic isolation, to treating emptiness as cognitive space, to extending accountability beyond handover through ongoing curation.

The session will explore how these provocations translate into action for placemaking practitioners:
- What if loneliness is a shared design problem?
- What if great design isn’t meant to be frictionless?
- What if overstimulation is the design flaw?
- What if agency mattered more than perfection?
- What if art is as essential a utility as plumbing?
- What if opening day wasn’t the finishing line, but the starting gun?
- What if change was built in from the start?

Utilising these provocations through interactive discussion, participants will gain a diagnostic framework for identifying where short-term pressures eliminate long-term adaptability in their own placemaking work and explore how intergenerational responsibility shapes belonging, collaboration, experimentation, and resilience in public space.

AI Tools For Placemaking—Without Losing Its Soul
Thursday September 24, 2026 4:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
How can AI help placemakers move faster, engage communities more meaningfully, and bring spatial visions to life—without losing what is most central to placemaking: being human.
This session combines two practitioner perspectives with hands-on experimentation—and a shared critical question: where does AI genuinely serve participation, and where does it fall short?
Sampo Ruoppila (CoPlanAI) maps the emerging landscape of AI-assisted participatory placemaking: how real-time AI-generated visualizations improve development discussions, enable more inclusive co-creation, and deliver deeper results with fewer resources—illustrated with examples from European cities and beyond.
Raphaela Mak (Metvibee) brings a complementary perspective from live projects using XR, AI-generated 3D models, and web-based co-creation platforms built with tools like Lovable—showing how these tools scale citizen engagement while keeping community voice central.
The final 30 minutes are hands-on: choose one of the demonstrated tools and experience AI co-creation yourself. For CoPlanAI, bring a photo of a place you think deserves transformation—or pick one of Wrocław. For Metvibee, prepare a short description of a participatory project you’re working on. You'll leave with new tools in your toolkit—and a sharper sense of if, and where, AI fits in your practice.

New European Bauhaus: the pathway to building resilient cities through culture and collaboration?
Thursday September 24, 2026 4:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
This panel brings together city representatives, activists, urban planners, cultural producers, artists, and policy experts to explore how resilience is shaped in practice and supported by policy.

Across Europe, cities face complex challenges that require place-based, participatory approaches connecting people, nature, and the built environment. Drawing on ideas and experiences from projects such as the Future Cities Platform, the Liveable Cities Network/NEBHUB 2050, NEB Junction, and EIT Community NEB, the discussion highlights how cities move from ideas and experimentation to implementation and strategic frameworks.

The panel will also reflect on how human-scale design, proximity, and everyday interactions contribute to resilience by strengthening the social fabric and fostering inclusive, adaptable urban environments.

The focus of the session will be to link local practice to the New European Bauhaus (NEB) in particular, an EU initiative that simultaneously promotes sustainability, inclusion, and aesthetics to shape better living environments. By bridging environmental goals with social cohesion and cultural meaning, the NEB provides an important framework for building resilience that is not only technical, but also social and place-based. Through provocations from contributors internal and external to the NEB “bubble”, the panel will explore the potential of NEB in furthering resilience-driven agendas, its vulnerabilities to political shifts, and role in enabling systems transformation.

The panel also addresses the challenge of aligning projects and networks through a stepwise approach to avoid fragmentation and build stronger ecosystems. Connecting local action with European policy frameworks, the session provides insights on how to scale, generate momentum, and create meaningful impact.

Using upcoming technologies to spark placemaking
Thursday September 24, 2026 4:15pm - 5:30pm CEST
Urban experimentation is traditionally tactile and physical, leaving new digital tools facing skepticism in placemaking.

This interactive panel addresses that gap by exploring how emerging digital technologies can naturally integrate into the "Sandbox City," taking STIPO and Orb Amsterdam’s new Immersive Experience tool, Placemaking Immersive, as a practical starting point.

Join this session to experience a live mini-demonstration of Placemaking Immersive and discover how digitalizing proven methods, like The Eye Level Game, can transform co-creation. You will learn how the Incremental Co-Creation methodology uses a unique relay format to spark on-site dialogue and step-by-step visual consensus without sacrificing human connection.

Most importantly, engage in an honest, forward-looking dialogue on bridging physical tactical urbanism with digital tools, overcoming skepticism, and embedding emerging tech into municipal decision-making while preserving public trust.
