Layers of Place: exploring and mapping wellbeing in urban spaces

What makes a place feel good? This outdoor workshop invites participants to explore how the interplay between physical design, the people present, and sensory stimuli shapes wellbeing in urban spaces. Drawing from communication and design perspectives as well as environmental psychology, you’ll learn how to “read” a place through multiple lenses.
Working in small groups, participants will investigate a real urban environment using guided tools such as observation sheets, sketches, photography, and creative prompts. You’ll analyse what is present (functions and physical structure), what is felt (sensory stimuli), and how people respond and interact (social and emotional layers). Rather than identifying “good” or “bad” places, we explore how different environments may be experienced differently depending on the person, context and moment.
Back together, groups will co-create a collective installation, mapping insights and uncovering patterns: which characteristics support different forms of wellbeing, belonging, and everyday urban experience.
This session is ideal for anyone interested in design, psychology and human experience. Join to sharpen your observational skills, gain new analytical tools and look at space in an integrated way. Expect a dynamic mix of exploration, reflection, and creative collaboration, and leave with practical tools to better understand and shape meaningful places.
