Creating better cities together.
Friday September 25, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
Ever wondered how placemaking and meeting places work in the Arctic?

This session brings together local practitioners, experiences, and examples from across the Arctic region to explore what makes public spaces work year-round in small Arctic towns and municipalities.

We will begin by sharing findings from our local project, Attractive Arctic Placemaking, developed at the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. The session will then broaden the perspective through guest interviews with practitioners from Scandinavia to Canada, exploring different approaches to Arctic meeting places, their potential, and the everyday challenges of creating vibrant public spaces throughout the year — from the midnight sun to the northern lights.

We will conclude with a hands-on co-creation workshop. Together, we will build a large seasonal timeline and invite participants to contribute examples of activities, places, events, interventions, and ideas that can activate public spaces throughout the year.

The result will be a shared and inspirational Arctic placemaking calendar — a practical collection of ideas for anyone working to create attractive, inclusive, and vibrant meeting places in Arctic communities.
