From plot to place: How co-created urban green spaces build community across difference

Urban food gardens and green spaces are celebrated for their ecological value, but their real transformative power lies in how they are made, and with whom. Belonging doesn't emerge from consultation: it grows from processes that take people's values and lived experience as seriously as technical solutions, bringing together people who would otherwise never meet and turning anonymous plots into places communities genuinely care for together.


Organised by the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership, this session brings together three perspectives on what that actually requires. FEED4FOOD will present their experience building urban agriculture living labs with vulnerable groups in Cyprus. IntegrateNbS will introduce their values-based engagement methodology designed to unlock the transformative potential of NbS in Poland. VšĮ „Kultūros dirbtuvė” will share insights from their work on transforming a contested site in a Lithuanain neighbourhood into a layered, multifunctional public space.


Together they ask: what does it take, in facilitation, institutional flexibility, and physical design, to make a public space feel like it truly belongs to everyone? In this workshop, participants work in small groups on real placemaking challenges, using structured tools and to identify blind spots across the practical, political, and personal dimensions. Participants leave with practical methods they can adapt in their own contexts.
