Placemaking Assessment Tool: Evaluating Places, Empowering Practitioners
Friday September 25, 2026 11:45am - 1:00pm CEST
This session presents the Placemaking Assessment tool, a digital survey built by Placemaking Europe for practitioners evaluating public spaces. The tool can be accessed through: https://assessment.placemaking-europe.eu/

Attendees will see how the tool structures assessment around four dimensions — comfort and image, access and linkages, uses and activities, and sociability — and how it adapts across project stages, from exploring opportunities and planning interventions to testing changes and monitoring outcomes.

The session walks through the full experience: a guided questionnaire combining observational and data-based questions, an automatically generated report of indicator results, tailored recommendations, and comparable case studies tied to each place's weakest indicators. Attendees will leave equipped to take the tool back to their own contexts — contributing to a growing global network of placemaking initiatives sharing knowledge across cities.

Placemaking Assessment is the first of three tools in a broader framework for evaluating placemaking work, followed by Process Assessment and Impact Measurement.

Stiching belonging
Friday September 25, 2026 2:30pm - 3:45pm CEST
How do people develop a sense of belonging in the city? This interactive workshop invites participants to explore this question through the creation of collective textile maps inspired by the Latin American tradition of arpilleras (hand-stitched artworks used to tell personal and community stories). Rather than drawing conventional maps, participants will use fabric, thread, and simple craft materials to represent meaningful places, daily routes, memories, and encounters that shape their relationship with urban spaces. Through this creative process, participants will reflect on how belonging is experienced differently depending on personal backgrounds, everyday practices, and social connections.
As the session progresses, individual textile pieces will be assembled into a collaborative mosaic that visualizes multiple experiences of the same city and highlights the diversity of urban lives. Participants will gain hands-on experience with an arts-based participatory method and explore how creative practices can support placemaking, storytelling, inclusion, and community-building. No artistic experience is required, just your curiosity and a willingness to share, listen, and create together!
